Wellness and Preventive Medicine

Your pet’s well being is our number one priority.

Allowing us to examine your pet, gives us the opportunity to detect problems before they turn into more serious issues. Usually questions will be asked regarding your pet's home activity, appetite, bowels and physical comfort. Certain answers will give us clues as to whether a problem might exist.

A wellness exam should be done at least once a year when under seven years of age and twice a year when older. All the major systems of the body are evaluated.

It is important to remember that pet's age more rapidly than humans. A pet who is seven years old is already in middle age!

When changes occur in your pet's routine life style, it is important to contact us for an examination. These changes can be, but are not limited to:
  • Excessive thirst or urination
  • Change in appetite or loss of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Trouble breathing
  • Decreased physical activity
  • Coughing
  • Excessive scratching
  • Skin sores
  • Excessive panting

Disease Prevention

Disease prevention is a critical component of a wellness program. This program requires a vaccination protocol, parasite prevention and heartworm protection. Vigilance to preventative measures is at the center of a healthy life.

The vaccines for dogs are:
  • Distemper
  • Adenovirus Type 2
  • Leptospirosis
  • Parvovirus
  • Parainfluenza
  • Lyme
  • Kennel Cough (Bordetella)
  • Rabies
The vaccines for cats are:
  • Panleukopenia
  • Calicivirus
  • Rhinotrachitis
  • Rabies
  • Leukemia

In addition, stool testing for parasite detection and blood testing for heartworm disease are important in a wellness program.

If a dog tests negative for heartworm disease, we strongly recommend a heartworm prevention program. This consists of giving a once a month pill that not only protects against heartworm disease, but also helps prevent intestinal parasites.

For those dogs that travel outside the Brooklyn area, Lyme disease, as well as many tick borne diseases, occurs with some frequency. We urge our clients to vaccinate against Lyme disease and, if exposed to ticks, do a blood screening for tick borne diseases.
